Mark Jeffrey Weiss is a painter based in the Snoqualmie Valley of Washington, whose work merges geometric and color field abstraction with an enduring interest in place, boundary, and human experience. Trained as a physical geographer and formerly active in spatial technology and analysis, Weiss brings a cartographer's sensitivity to space into his studio practice — mapping not terrain, but the emotional and cultural landscapes where conflict, migration, and diasporic experience intersect.
Weiss began painting full-time in 2019, building a daily studio practice grounded in intuition and observation. His process favors an autonomic, color-first approach: paint is allowed to bleed, assert itself, and find form before composition is resolved, echoing the legacies of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting while remaining distinctly contemporary. Music, shifting light, and mood are constant collaborators in the studio, and his surfaces, built through layered, expressive brushwork, hold space for both resolution and openness.
His work has been shown internationally, including exhibitions in New York, Seattle, Miami, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, and Bordeaux. Notable presentations include Sonic Reducer, his inaugural New York solo exhibition with Galeria Azur (2024), and This is You are It (2026), a recent body of work continuing his exploration of space, place, and abstraction, which will be on view during a Pop-Up Project edition in the Arts District of Los Angeles during September 2026.
